United Club of Nerul overcome Clube Sao Miguel to enter quarters

VASCO: Saligao United staged a spectacular rally to upset last year’s finalists Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda 12-11 via the sudden death to enter the semi-finals of 40th HQ-NRB Bandodkar Memorial All-Goa inter-village football tournament at MPT ground, Baina, here, Sunday. The score was 1-1 at full time.
Don Bosco drew first blood in the seventh minute of the second session when Francisco Andrade beat the rival keeper off a wonderful pass by Ashley Aruajo.
Stunned by the reverse, Saligao staged a splendid rally to equalize eight minutes later with Edwin Feranndes scoring off a pass by Trevor Fernandes.
Later, the ball swung from one end to the other with both the teams going all-out for the match-winner but to no avail and hence the tie-breaker was enforced.
Perhaps for the first time in the long history of the tournament, all the 11 players had to take the spot kick to try and break the deadlock. While James Soares, Ester Dias, Paulo Joao, Govind Mahale, Martin Fernandes, Judas Fernandes, Sona Khorjuvenkar, John Soares, Edwin Fernandes, Jude Fernandes and Mukesh Rani scored for Saligao while Milagres Mendoca, Vicente Barbosa, Pinto Gama, Ashely Araujo, Agnelo Baretto, Francisco Mendes, Alvito Dias, Savio Cardozo, Soccoro Aruajo, Michael Valeiro scored for Don Bosco.
Referee Seby Fernandes, who controlled the proceedings cautioned Paulo Joao and James Soares, both of Saligao and Alvito Dias of Don Bosco Oratory for dangerous play.
On Saturday, United Club of Nerul overcame Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao 5-4 via the tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals. There was no score at full time.
Taleigao goalkeeper Eddlie Rodrigues effected some stunning saves in one-on-one situations but failed to rise to the occasion in the tie-breaker where the Nerul players, Roston Pereira, Felix Barretto, Rochel Fernandes, Ryan Pereira and Shristi Gaonkar beat him fair and square. While Kartick Peixo, Marshall Fernandes, Leonard Fernandes and Wendell Aldonkar converted their tries, Octaviano saw his attempt hit the upright.
