RAIA: Sao Jose de Areal edged past a spirited Goa Velha Sports Club 8-7 to marched into the pre-quarters of 49th Chandor Seamen football tournament played at Chandor ground, on Saturday. 

Goa Velha Sports Club’s Satish Kankonkar scored in the 21st minute with a powerful grounder. The Sao Jose Areal boys huffed and puffed looking for parity but to no avail.

Goa Velha Sports Club led 1-0 at lemon break.

On resumption, both teams played with a sense of urgency when finally Francis Afonso tapped the ball into the rival goal from a long pass, giving Goa Velha Sports Club a 2-0 lead.

It looked as though the Sao Jose de Areal boys lost steam, but to the pleasant surprise of the spectators, suddenly gained renewed vigour after Darryl pulled one back for Sao Jose de Areal in the dying minutes. Myron Silva brought parity in the add-on time for Sao Jose de Areal taking the score to 2-2 draw at the end of the regulation time.

In the penalty shootout that ensued, Frazer Viegas, Vanael Travaso, Aron Andro, Aryan  Carvalho, Darryl Costa and Dezi Oliveira were on target for Sao Jose de Areal. For Goa Velha Sports Club, Francis Afonso, Prasil Kankonkar, Sairaj Chodankar, Vikram Mangeshkar and Krishnab Madkaikar were on target.

Satish Kankonkar of Goa Velha Sports Club was awarded the man-of-the-match award.
