PANJIM: The Goa Football Association has decided to conduct the second edition of the GFA Women’s League in association with Vedanta from the third week of July this year. Riding on the success of the first edition, the GFA has proposed to increase the team strength to eight from the present six teams.
At a specially convened meeting of the stakeholders of the GFA Women’s League presided over by the President Elvis Gomes, it was decided that the league will be played on a double leg league basis wherein the lower age of the players shall not be less than 15 years.
Accordingly, the GFA has invited those women players who were not registered in the first edition of the women’s league held last year to register themselves with GFA so as to place them in the draft system. The general secretary of GFA, Welvin Menezes informed that the league shall be played at five different venues across the state preferably over the weekends.
Menezes informed that GFA along with Vedanta, the sponsors of the league have already drawn an action plan for promotion and branding of the league with a focus on Girl Empowerment. Dr. Varun Carvalho along with Erina have also drawn up the theme song. Others present at the meeting were Arjuna Awardee Brahmanand Shankwalkar, Ex- FIFA Referee Maria Rebello, and GFA Executive committee members Arnaldo Costa and Angelo Albuquerque amongst others.
Meanwhile, the Executive Committee of GFA decided that the existing six teams shall be allowed retention of 10 players from their squad of the last season and allow transfers of two players to other teams. The GFA also appointed Arnaldo Costa and Maria Rebello as the Organizing Secretary and Joint Secretary of the GFA Vedanta Women’s League 2018 under the Chairmanship of the President, Elvis Gomes.
Meanwhile, the GFA Executive Committee congratulated the President, Elvis Gomes for being awarded with a citation by Brahmanand Shankwalkar along with Sukhwinder Singh on behalf of Sesa Football Academy in recognition of his efforts in reviving women’s football in the state and his work towards women empowerment.
