St Sebastian SC, Mapusa overcame ten-men Holiday SC Arpora 2-1 in GFA’s Third Division at Anjuna Gymkhana ground on Thursday. The score was 1-1 at the lemon break.
Viraj Naik was sent off in the 41st after receiving his second yellow card for a foul in the box. He gave away a penalty in the process which Sebastian captain Joalen Fernandes took, but it was wonderfully saved by Holiday custodian Sime Purushkar.
Mapusa attacked well and young Joalen Fernandes stood out for them. Although he missed the penalty he had scored earlier and gave the rival goalkeeper a lot to think about. Recently with his goal scoring exploits, Joalen helped his college Xavier’s HSS win the inter-school football tournament and he looks like a bright prospect for the future.
Holiday deserve full credit for continuing to attack after playing nearly 50 minutes with ten men. Former Vasco Sports Club Junior, Cyril Lucas had a very productive outing for Holiday.
In the 13th, Holiday took the lead through Cyril Lucas who must have thought his chance had gone when his shot was saved, but the ball slipped under the goalkeeper’s arm, leaving Cyril to run on and tap into an empty net.
In the 22nd, Joalen Fernandes perfectly executed a cross from teammate Anthony Viegas to level for Sebastian.
Five minutes into the second half, Sebastian’s Mohidin Khan received the ball inside the box and placed neatly past the Holiday goalkeeper.
In the 64th, Holiday’s Rajaran Divkar had to be replaced after going down injured.
In the last half an hour Sebastian had many opportunities to score but the rival goalkeeper pulled of some fine saves to keep the score down.
In another match at St Christopher’s ground, Tivim, BAFF defeated Football Club de Sanquelim 5-2. BAFF raced into a two-goal lead in the first 12 minutes with goals from Amit Gadhi and Tushad Parab.
Early in the second half Abhishek Lamani scored a brace to bring Sanquelim level. In the74th Prasad Parab netted for BAFF. A minute later Vishnu Mandreker made it 4-2 and in the 82nd Vishnu scored again to seal the victory for BAFF.
