MAPUSA: United Club of Nerul breezed past Saligao United Sports Club 4-2 via the tie-breaker in the finals of 22nd late V M Salgaocar football tournament organized by Saligao Sporting Club at Saligao ground, Sunday. The teams were locked goalless at full time.
Saligao United dominated the first half but some fine goalkeeping by UC Nerul custodian Siddhesh Morje left them frustrated.
After resumption, UC Nerul enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession and tried hard to break the deadlock but their forwards lacked sharpness.
In the penalty shoot-out, Nerul held their nerves as Royston, Sankit, Benit and Pio scored while M A Francis and Nestor converted for Saligao United.
Earlier, at half time, Saligao Sporting Club officials introduced chief guest Peter Vales, technical director, Salgaocar Football Club and guest of honour, Fr George Dias to the players and match officials.
UC Nerul were awarded the winner’s trophy alongwith Rs 30,000 while Saligao United had to be content with the runners-up trophy and Rs 20,000.
Individual prizes: Best goalkeeper Siddhesh Morje, UC Nerul. Best defender Benit, UC Nerul. Best midfielder Vesvino Miranda, Saligao United. Best forward Sankit, UC Nerul. Last goal of the tournament Pio D’Souza, UC Nerul.
Fr George also gave away certificates to the participants of boys U-12, U-14 and U-16 coaching camp conducted by Saligao Sporting under Bibiano Fernandes and Augustine Dias.
