PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Thursday directed a Dhargal based cement factory to install ambient air quality monitoring station at its site.
The factory which is facing opposition from the locals over alleged air and water pollution has been issued a series of directions by the board.
The Dhargal gram sabha had turned violent last Sunday with a panchayat member Avelino Rodrigues was assaulted over illegal operation of Akash cement factory.
According to the gram sabha members the factory is operating without any permission from the panchayat.
“15 days time has been given to implement the measures failing which action as per law would be taken (against the factory),” Noronha said adding that the Board along with panchayat would conduct a site inspection on June 14.
Following a complaint from the gram sabha members over the pollution, the GSPCB Thursday held a hearing, attended by the managing director of the factory and the panch members.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manual Noronha said that the factory is functioning with required Consent under Water and Air pollution act.
However, he said, it was brought to the notice of the board that the factory owner could be guilty of water and air pollution at Dhargal.
The Board has directed the management to install ambient air quality monitoring station and have a dust separation system in place.
