PANJIM: Verna Sports Club edge past hosts Betalbatim Sports Club 4-2 via the tie-breaker, to emerge champions of the second all-Goa Martin’s Cup inter-village football tournament, at Betalbatim ground, on Sunday.
The game started attackingly as Betalbatim held the upper hand with short and accurate passes. They caught the Verna defenders on the wrong foot but lacked in the finishing third.
The hero of the match was Verna goalkeeper who made numerous saves under the crossbar.
The final was witnessed by a huge Sunday crowd that cheered their teams.
After a barren regulation period, Verna had the last laugh in the ensuing tie-breaker.
The chief guest Fr Alfred Vaz distributed the prizes. Verna were awarded Rs 50,000 while Betalbatim had to settle for Rs 30,000.
Carafina Pereira was the guest of honour and MLA Micky Pacheco presided over the function.
The following individual prizes were awarded to Man-of-the-match Ariston Fernandes, Best goalkeeper of the tournament Anthony Fernandes, Best defender of the final Frazier Rogtao and Highest scorer of the final Ariston Fernandes.
