MAPUSA: Goan Football Club strengthened their lead at the top of the table with a hard fought 3-0 win over Vasco Sports Club in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Sunday.
With Sunday’s win. Goan FC are four points clear at the top as they have 26 points from 10 matches, while Vasco are stuck on 10 points from 11 matches.
After a goalless first half all the three goals for the Young Gaurs came in the second half through Liston Colaco, Imran Khan and Lalawmpuia.
Young Gaurs were in total control of the match and had an early chance to take the lead when Liston Colaco darted down the flank and on entering the danger box let go a fierce shot but was brilliantly pushed for a corner by the diving keeper Thapa
The Young Gaurs kept raiding their rival citadel time and again but could not find a way past the Vasco defence which was well marshalled by their skipper Lenstan and also keeper Sanju Thapa who brought some fine stops in the first session.
Vasco had their chance in the 17th minute when Schubert outsmarted a couple of defenders and laid the ball on platter to Anil Gaonkar but before he could sort his feet out, the Goan FC keeper Shubham Dhas left his charge and disposed the winger.
Thapa once again brought a fine acrobatic save to stop Young Gaurs Lalawmpuia hot-blooded shot in finding the net.
Young Gaurs finally got the breakthrough goal in the 61st minute when Lalawmpuia’s measured cross found Liston who after missing a couple of sitters earlier finally found the net with a deft placement to break the resistance of the strong Vasco defending.
Vasco who had defended resolutely crumbled like a pack of cards and conceded the second in the 71st minute through Imran Khan who found the nets after some amazing footwork from a pass by Schubert.
The Young Gaurs sealed the three points in the 81st minute when Imran’s splitting pass found Lalawmpuia in the box who outfoxed the Vasco keeper Thapa and slotted the ball into the unguarded nets to make it 3-0.
