MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council building completed 113 years on April 30 given the fact that it was officially inaugurated on April 30, 1905 at a grand function held in Margao. The foundation stone for the building was laid on September 27, 1902.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was quite unique as a lady from Comba took up the challenge of taking the foundation stone to the pit nude for which she was awarded with a cash prize by the then Governor Col Eduardo Augusto Rodrigues Galhardo in the presence of a large crowd of Portuguese and Salcete gentry.
The Governor imposed heavy taxes in Salcete to complete the building but people resented the taxes levied on them.
and Amaldo de Menezes from Raia even wrote a mando titled Kitlem Odruxtt Amchem.
