MARGAO: A minor girl from Salcete was allegedly sexually harassed and raped by a labourer, aged 25, a resident of IDC Cuncolim and native of Bihar.
On Saturday, the Cuncolim Police arrested the alleged accused Promod Mahato and lodged him in police custody. The victim and accused are neighbours and were residing in a rented room near IDC Cuncolim.

Police Sub Inspector Kavita Rawat, who is investigating the case has registered a case of rape against accused Promod under Section 376, 354 of Indian Penal Code for rape, sexual harassment and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act) and 8 of Goa Children Act. The victim girl has been sent for medical examination at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
“The report is awaited,” the police said.
According to police, the mother of victim lodged a complaint alleging that her minor daughter was allegedly raped by the accused, who is her neighbour.
Police said that the mother had lodged a complaint of Friday and on Saturday PSI Kavita Rawat laid the trap and arrested alleged accused Promod from the IDC area.
“The alleged accused will be sent for medical examination and his statement will be recorded,” the police added.
