PORVORIM/BICHOLM: A picnic ended in a tragedy for a seven-member group from Porvorim, when three of them drowned in Tillari River at Tillariwadi-Dodamarg, Maharashtra, Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, the bodies of Imran Dayab Badekhan (20) and Ramzaan Chandwale (22) were recovered, while the body of Tohafin Dattagir Badekhan (18) was yet to be found.
According to relatives of the deceased, the group of seven had gone for a picnic near the Tillari dam, Maharashtra in their car at about 10.30 am.
At about 3.30 pm, four of them went to wash their car, while the other three decided to have a swim in the river. The three youth were unable to realize the depth of the river and soon started drowning.
Sighting commotion, the other four group members tried to save them and started shouting for help. After hearing the cries, locals rushed to their rescue and after about half an hour retrieved the body of Imran Badekhan from the water.
Dodamarg Police also rushed to the site.
At about 6.30 pm, the body of Ramzaan Chandwale was recovered. The police along with locals carried out the operation till late evening.
“As there was no light in the area, we had to stop the search operation. We will continue the operation in the morning and will also see if the body of the third person has been washed away due to the current,” police sources told media.
After hearing about the incident, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte rushed to the site to take stock of the situation.
The relatives of the deceased said they got the news from police at about 4.45 pm.
Tohafin Badekhan was answering his SSC exams and was to answer his last paper on Monday. Ramzaan Chandwale was working in a firm, while Imram Badekhan was unemployed.
Dodamarg police officials including Vijay Kambli, RG Kadam, RG Nadaff and Kale were present at the scene.
