MARGAO: Announcing patrolling along the beach belt to provide security for women, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said the government would soon come out with measures to restrict and regulate the influx of migrants and to make compulsory sanitary and water provisions.
The chief minister was in Betalbatim on Sunday noon as he visited the two victims, an SSC girl student and a 42-year old woman, who were attacked by migrants last month.
“I will intensify patrolling along the beach belt within the next 10-12 days. Law and order means, women should be free to walk down on the beach even late at night. Active patrolling will take place soon in the village,” he said, while addressing Betalbatim villagers on the sensitive issue.
Clarifying that he is not against people coming for work in the State, Parrikar, however, stressed on the need to impose restrictions on people entering the State for labour work. “There have been instances of criminals taking shelter in the State after committing crimes in their native State. Hence, the identity of these people should be checked and verified before entering the State. We will make compulsory verification of their antecedents within next 15 days,” Parrikar added.
The chief minister said that the government also intends to make compulsory for the landlords to make sanitation and water facilities for the tenants.
“There’s a tendency on the part of the landlords to lease out a room to migrants without toilets. The government is committed to bring in discipline on the provision for facilities,” he said, adding that similar situation is prevailing in the villages of Sao Jose de Areal and area around the Verna Industrial estate.
Referring to the incident wherein an SSC girl student was attacked by a migrant, the chief minister appreciated the role played by local MLA Mickky Pacheco in bringing the situation under control. “I would like to appreciated Mickky and the people that the situation did not go out of control,” he said, adding that people did not take the law into their hands on the day of the incident.
He announced that the government would provide financial help to both the victims, even as he assured to grant paid leave to the mother of the victim girl working in Hospicio.
In his address, Parish Priest Fr Ulabdo Da Cunha mentioned the two incidents of assault on local women by migrants and expressed happiness that the chief minister has come to inquire into the issue.
