CANACONA: The Balram Education Society (BES), which is headed by Sports Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, has received the State government’s nod to commence a new higher secondary in Canacona taluka from this academic year.
A communiqué from the Director of Education (DoE) to the BES on June 3 states that permission has been accorded to commence a new higher secondary school at Ordhofond-Canacona in the Arts stream with a minimum of 25 students.
The process for admission to Class XI (Arts) will commence from June 4 and the higher secondary school will start classes from June 12.
The DoE has asked the management of BES to make suitable arrangements for drinking water, toilets, laboratory and library, besides appointing staff as per the existing norms of educational institutions.
The permission, however, has been accorded for a two-year period and it will be evaluated on completion of two years. To begin with, the DoE has granted permission to commence only the Arts stream and sources disclosed that the BES is expected to commence the vocational stream from next academic year.
Incidentally, the Balram Residential High School at Amone-Poinguinim witnessed its first SSC batch appearing in the March 2014 exams and 20 of the 22 students were successful in the exams.
Besides the Balram Residential High School, the BES has also simultaneously commenced a primary school at Ordhofond since last year.
Incidentally, the Balram Higher Secondary School will be the third such institute in Canacona taluka, after Government Higher Secondary School (Mastimoll), Shri S S Angle Higher Secondary School (Maxem).
According to sources, an application to commence a new higher secondary school by another educational society in Canacona has been pending with the government since the past few years.
