PANJIM: Travel and
Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(GCCI) together have filed a writ petition in the High Court with the aim to
execute the government’s order of making digital meters for taxis compulsory in
the state of Goa.
Speaking to
Herald, TTAG President Savio Messais said “The transport department had issued
a order making digital meters compulsory for taxi but the decision currently
has been put on hold due to protest by taxi operators”

“For the
past many years we have been receiving numerous complaints from the tourists
regarding taxi cheating and high fares especially on the Airport, hotels and
other important tourist places. It’s been a long time that the government has
not taken action and that is the reason we decided to approach the High Court”
said Messais
The petition
seeks a mandamus from the High Court directing the government to strictly and
diligently implement Rule 140 of the Goa Motor Vehicles Rules, 1991 made under
the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 as amended in the year 2015.
The petitioner
further seeks a mandamus from the High Court directing the government to
consider the implementation, in accordance with law, of mobile or any other
such systems which are based on technological advancement in the state of Goa
which will provide efficient service to the passengers and also provide higher
revenues to the taxi operators.
Meanwhile, the State
government had earlier made it mandatory for all taxi operators to install
digital fare meters with Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking device,
failing which no new permits or renewals would be granted. However the decision had been put on hold due
to protest by taxi operators.
