PANJIM: The Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) has demanded the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) to shift the venue of International Human Rights Day programme to be held on December 13.

In a letter written to GHRC Secretary, DRAG President Avelino de Sa has said, “We have received information that the Commission is organising a programme on December 13 in association with GOACAN in the Commission’s office to celebrate the International Human Rights Day.”
“You are aware that the Commission’s office is not accessible for persons with disability and the elderly in violation of Sections 3 and 40 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016. We are shocked to note that the Commission will be violating the human rights of Persons with Disability (PwD) in their programme to celebrate the International Human Rights Day, when they are mandated to protect them,” he said and demanded that the venue be shifted immediately.
The DRAG President has said that if the venue of the programme is not shifted then the association will hold a protest outside the Commission’s office.
“We demand immediate shifting of the venue of your International Human Rights Day programme on December 13 to a venue accessible for persons with disability and the elderly, failing which we will be forced to protest outside your office on the day of your programme. We also demand a sign language interpreter for the programme,” De Sa said.
We also demand shifting of the office of the Commission to a place accessible to persons with disability and the elderly within three months of this letter, he added.
