MARGAO: A unique pilot project was launched in Cavelossim on Monday where school students of the 9th and 10th standard received saplings that were geo-tagged, to help keep tabs on whether they were being taken care of by their new guardians.

The students then took their saplings home and planted them in their gardens or close to their respective houses, and these saplings were geo-tagged to keep track of them.
This project was launched at the Cavelossim Church School by Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas in the presence of the school authorities as well as high-ranking police officials. Saplings were also planted within the school campus.
Viegas announced that 2,500 saplings will be planted across the constituency and that they have started this drive from Cavelossim, and will be covering all the other villages over the next ten days.
All the students were given a QR code which they scanned and their details were registered on a mobile application that is tracking the tree-planting drive. The app also contains information on the type of sapling, the exact location, and other details of its student guardian. Teams have also been formed to help the students care for their plants and foster healthy competition. Prizes will be given next year to those students whose trees are the healthiest, along with certificates to those whose trees survived.
Viegas added that this is being done for the first time in Goa. “The objective is to make sure that the future generation is made aware of what they need to do to protect the environment and that the use of technology also ensures that there is accountability,” said the MLA.
