MARGAO: The Colva Traffic Cell has recorded a significant rise in cases of drunken driving this year, booking 248 offenders by November 2024 compared to 199 cases during the same period in 2023.

Efforts to address this increase have been strengthened with the provision of 10 new alcometres to Salcete, facilitating more effective alcohol concentration tests during traffic stops. This upgrade in resources has enabled stricter monitoring of violations under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
This year, the highest number of 50 cases were booked by the Traffic Cell in January, followed by 37 each in August and September.
Initially, enforcement faced challenges due to a shortage of alcometers, with the Colva Cell having only one device. Recently, however, two additional alcometers have been provided, bringing the total to three. Officers believe this will further enhance their ability to identify and penalise offenders effectively.
In addition to tackling drunken driving, the Colva Traffic Cell has been vigilant in addressing other violations, including driving without a licence, failure to wear helmets on two-wheelers, and use of vehicles with tinted glass, resulting in substantial fines.
With upgraded equipment and intensified patrols, the Colva Traffic Cell aims to further curb the menace of drunken driving, a major contributor to fatal accidents. Traffic officials remain confident that these measures will improve road safety in Salcete and deter risky behaviour behind the wheel.
