MARGAO: Abhishek Hiremath, a 25-year-old resident of Kakumoddi, Quepem, has been sentenced by the District and Sessions Judge for South Goa for attempting to murder his former teacher, Laxmikant Shikerker, 62, from Assolda.
The court took into consideration the three years and ten days already served by Hiremath in custody and imposed an additional fine of Rs 15,000. In case of default, he would serve 15 days of further imprisonment.
Hiremath was arrested by Quepem police following a complaint lodged by Shikerker. According to the investigation, led by PSI Mayur Sawant, Hiremath poured petrol on Shikerker and attempted to ignite him using a lighter. Charges were brought under Sections 457 (trespassing), 380 (theft), 469 (forgery), and 307 (attempted murder) of the IPC.
The crime prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with the Public Prosecutor, V G Costa, representing the state during the trial.
