Presently posted as SP Traffic Cell, Gawas joined the department as PSI in 1987. He worked at various police stations and units, after which he was selected as DySP through direct recruitment in 1998, through the GPSC. He was posted as SDPO Mapusa and later as DySP Traffic (North). In 2003, he was promoted as SP and worked as Additional SP (North), SP (Headquarters), SP (North), and SP (South) before his transfer to traffic department. He is a recipient of Chief Minister’s Police Medal in 2006 and President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2013.
Murder accused denied bail
MARGAO: South Goa district and sessions court judge, Nutan Sardessai rejected bail application moved by accused doctor Vijayraj Dessai from Ambaji, Margao, against whom the CBI has filed charge sheet under sections 302, 201 and 498A IPC, for murder, destroying evidence and harassment. Judge Sardessai however dropped section 201 and 498A IPC and framed charges under section 302 IPC and the matter has been posted for further hearing on September 25. The accused Dr Vijayraj argued himself before the court while CBI was represented by advocate Kawarpal Singh. Dr Vijayraj had filed a complaint at Margao that his wife Archana Dessai went missing on December 5, 2010; however, her body was recovered in a decomposed state after some days from the foot of a bridge at Sawanvadi in Karnataka. The case was transferred to CBI who on basis of post mortem report registered offence of murder, destroying evidence and harassment against her husband Dr Vijayraj.
Sancoale attack accused absconding
VASCO: The main accused in the politically motivated attack on Ram Gopal Yadav at Bogmalo late Tuesday night is absconding and police are in the process of arresting four of his accomplices. Vasco police quoting Shivanand Bingui complaint said a group of five persons had gone to dine at a restaurant at Bogmalo on Tuesday night, when another group from Sancoale consisting of Yadav and three others reached the restaurant. On noticing the other group, Yadav, Bingui and two others walked out of the restaurant. Both groups had an ongoing political rivalry, and as they were moving out the accused rushed out assaulted Yadav. An eye witness at the restaurant said that other members of Bingui’s group rushed to stop the fight and in the bargain, one group member sustained minor injuries. Yadav was rushed to Chicalim Cottage Hospital and was later moved to GMC from where he was discharged. However, Yadav was again admitted at the GMC on Wednesday morning as he complained of ill-health.
Road safety initiative launched
PANJIM: Yes Bank, in association with the Directorate of Transport launched an awareness campaign on road safety – ‘Say YES to Road Safety,’ on the theme ‘Helmet – Wear if you care.’ The campaign was launched by Transport Minister, Sudin Dhavalikar. Arun Desai, Director of Transport was also present. along with Namita Vikas and Rana Kapoor of Yes Bank A series of workshops and awareness programmes with local communities, college students and corporate will also be conducted.
PM address screened at Margao HSS
PANJIM: Shree Damodar HSS of Science, Margao organized a screening of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on September 5 from 3 pm to 4.45 pm.. Bhai Naik President and Manager of Mathagramasth Hindu Sabha made arrangement in Govind Pai Raiturkar’s hall. The talk was attended by students of the primary, secondary and higher secondary school along with teachers. The school expressed thanks to Naik for the arrangement of TV and Zee network.
Ghumat aarti contest held at Baina
PANJIM: The 5th all Goa ghumat aarti competition organized by Vasco City Leo Lions (VCLL) was inaugurated at Vinayak Kala Sangh Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandap, Baina, Vasco, by MPDA Chairman and MMC Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar. VCLL President Kalika Lotlikar and the President of the Sangh Jayant Jadhav were also present. 14 groups participated. Greeting card design contest was also organized. Shri Sai Mhalsa Aarti Mandal, Mardol bagged first place, Shri Ganesh Aarti Mandal, Nanoda and Shri Navsai Aarti Mandal, Borim, the 2nd and 3rd respectively. Prizes were given by S Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar.

PANJIM: The President of Dalit Sanghatna Shambu Bhau Bandekar announced the ‘Dalit Mitra Puraskar’ to Gurudas B Natekar a businessman, educationist, writer, social worker, politician, orator, drama artist. He has served as chairman of Dnyanprassark, Vaishya Mandal, MPT Trustees and is presently the Vice Chairman of the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank of Goa Ltd.

Jean Menezes excels at Oncosurgery
PANJIM: Dr Jean Louis Menezes from Margao topped the European Board in Oncosurgery-2014. Dr Menezes did his MBBS from Goa Medical College in 2003 and his MS in General Surgery from the same College in 2006. After a stint in Goa at the GMC Hospital, Dr Jean Louis moved to Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, where he worked as a Senior Resident in the Dept of Oncosurgery. He later completed his DNB in Oncosurgery at Prince Ali Khan Hospital in Mumbai. He did his Fellowship in Laproscopic Oncosurgery at Tata Memorial Hospital. He has now topped the European Board of Oncosurgery for 2014. Dr Jean Louis is the son of Dr Ninette Araujo Menezes and Dr Arcanjo Menezes.
All Goa fishing contest
PANJIM: The United Friends of Alto-Guimaraes, Panjim will organize their 8th annual all Goa open fishing contest on September 14, at the Captain of Ports jetty opposite the Adil Shah Palace (former Goa secretariat) from 10 am onwards. On-the-spot entries will be accepted and participants are expected to carry their own fishing gear and bait. Cash prizes will be awarded besides various spot and consolation prizes. Special prizes await lady participants.
