Guv calls for joint efforts to save tigers in Sahyadri hill

Governor Dr S S Sidhu today called for joint efforts by Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra to save tigers in Sahyadri hill range from poaching.
“Evidence of tigers straying into Goa state from Karnataka side of Sahyadri mountain has been collected by the authority concerned,” Governor told a gathering this evening at Goa International Centre, Dona Paula.
“It only means that there have to be collective efforts on the part of Goa, Karnataka and possibly Maharashtra to save tigers from poaching,” he added.
Governor was talking on the occasion of concluding Konkan Adventure rally to save tigers from Sahyadri initiated by Rotary Club.
Speaking further, Sidhu said that although Government of India has recognized the need to protect wildlife and way back in 1972, the wildlife protection act was enacted, yet government efforts alone cannot succeed.
“A matter of crucial importance in preserving Tigers or any other species of wildlife is to create greater awareness amongst the people and NGOs and their involvement in identifying and bringing to book poachers in unison with government authorities,” Governor said.
Six day long rally which had around 100 youths participating in it began in Mumbai and culminated in Goa after travelling 700 kms in the Konkan region.
Prasad Hiray, President Konkan Adventure, said that if we able to maintain the Sahyadri corridor free from poaching and human intervention than we will certainly have made tiger habitat sustainable for our future generation.
He said that the rally did not only drove attention towards protection of flora and fauna but also managed to associate with the hearts of the people residing in this region.
“If we need to save the tiger and environment, we need to reach to every heart of the people in this region,” he added.
Rotary Club of Panjim’s senior official Dr Shashank Mahatme said that mining industry should not allowed at the cost of forest.
“Mining industry has been systematically destroying hills and forest areas thus disturbing the wildlife,” he added.
Goa University’s vice Chancellor Dr Dilip Deobagkar, Rotary Club Panjim’s president Dinesh Kamat also spoke on the occasion.
