MARGAO: Pursuant to a letter that had been written by the South Goa District Collector’s office to the Revenue Department, the State government has confirmed that the quarry leaseholders need to apply for the conversion sanads.
This was communicated to the South Goa District Collector Jyoti Kumar in a letter written by the Under Secretary (1) Sandeep Gawde.
The Collector had earlier sought clarity on that issue.
“In an order passed by the High Court of Bombay at Goa on a writ petition it is stated that the provision of Sections 29 to 32 of the Land Revenue Code squarely applies to all the lands, irrespective of government or private land, hence the law department has opined that it is mandatory for the quarry leaseholders to apply for conversion sanads and precedence followed by the mines department in such cases is to be ascertained,” said the Revenue Secretary in that letter.
The South Goa district administration had earlier conducted a survey of quarries in the district where it was discovered that several of them were operating allegedly without the required documents which include the all-important conversion sanads.
The collectorate has been reviewing the status of quarries upon the directions of the State government.
