Unite, fight poverty,CM calls upon Goans

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has called upon Goans to unite and fight against poverty, illiteracy and unemployment.
“We need to fight against poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. If we overcome these challenges, then we can be liberated in real terms…Every person should benefit services provided to them” Kamat said at the inaugural ceremony of Golden Jubilee year of state’s liberation day at Azad Maidan, today evening.
The function also attended by Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar, Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar, MLAs Pandurang Madkaikar and Victoria Fernandes, Corporation of City of Panjim Mayor Carolina Po and others paid tribute to freedom fighters.
Addressing the gathering, freedom fighter Naguesh Karmali complimented the Government for making efforts for the welfare of the freedom fighters and State overall.
He recalled the Portuguese rule in Goa and how the Indian Army played a vital role to liberate Goa in 32-hours in December 1961. “December 19th is not only the liberation of Goa but it is a complete Independence of the nation,” he said.
Earlier in the evening a torch light procession (Mashal Yatra) involving freedom fighters, students and others was held from Kala Academy, Joggers Park at Altinho and Babasaheb Ambedkar Park at Panjim. The three processions culminated at Azad Maidan.
Among the freedom fighters who lit the torch included Naguesh Karmali, Flaviano Dias, Laxman Govekar and Alvaro Pereira. The inaugural ceremony was followed by cultural programme.
Two books namely ‘Fifty Years of Goa’s Liberation’ by the Government of Goa and ‘Landmark of Goa’s Liberations’ published by a weekly newspaper were released on the occasion.
More than 2000 students will participate in the Liberation Day celebration on December 19 to be held at Campal ground. The Chief Minister will unfurl the national Tricolour at 9:15 am followed by awards presentation and cultural events.
