PANJIM: The District and Sessions Court, Mapusa sentenced two persons to undergo life imprisonment for murdering a restaurant owner Vishwajeet Singh at Candolim in 2018.

According to the prosecution, on August 7, 2018, the restaurant owner had lodged a complaint against one of his workers Umesh Lamani of Candolim for stealing his motorcycle.
Upset over the complaint, the accused along with Daya Shankar Sahu, a native of Madhya Pradesh stabbed the deceased to death using a sharp knife and a sword during the midnight hours in the parking area of the deceased’s apartments at Candolim.
The then Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi arrested both the accused from Karnataka and the case was thoroughly which included recovery of weapons of assault, identification of witnesses and evidences and seizure of valuable CCTV footages and finally a chargesheet was filed in the same year itself.
The bail applications of both the accused were dismissed many times during the trial. The prosecution examined 42 witnesses and digital evidence to prove the case.
Further after six years of trial and examination of all witnesses, CCTV and scientific evidences the Sessions Judge Sharmila Patil Court pronounced life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 for both the accused for committing murder under section 302 of IPC and further to undergo three years imprisonment for offences under section 5 read with 27 of Arms Act.
The investigation team consisted of DySP JivbaDalvi (then Calangute PI) PSIs Sitaram Malik and Mahesh Naik, ASI Subhash Malvankar and other staff.
Public Prosecutors Anuradha Talaulikar, Jennifer Santamaria and Roy D’Souza represented the State.
