MAPUSA: “Drug peddling still exists in the State and large number of teenagers are falling victims to narcotics and alcohol abuse,” Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi said.

Dalvi was addressing the media on the sidelines of ill effect of drugs and awareness programme at Dyanprasarak Mandals College and Research Centre, Mapusa.
The programme aimed at creating awareness on drug abuse and use of music to combat drug abuse among the youth.
Admitting that many teenagers were victims to narcotics and alcohol abuse, the Goa Police emphasised the need to create awareness amongst the general public including students about the ill-effects of addiction, said DySP Jivba Dalvi.
Dalvi said that a multi-prompt approach such as education, sensitisation and awareness besides prosecution of offenders is to be taken to ensure the youth stay away from the menace.
“There is a possibility that a lot of youngsters are lured to the vice due to peer pressure, depression, anxiety or the entire idea of fitting in a friend’s circle. It is essential that a collaborative effort is initiated. The police, doctors and NGOs should join hands to fight the menace,” Dalvi said.
“A lot of teenagers are being trapped in this vice. It is important for social institutions, police and the administration to go to the people, students, schools, colleges and educate them about the ill-effects of drugs and alcohol,” advised the officer.
