MARGAO: In a notice to those persons having their vehicles parked in public places causing hindrance, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has asked the owners to remove them within 15 days or face punitive action under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Through the notice, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that there are many vehicles that are left on the roadside within the MMC jurisdiction.

These unused vehicles found on the footpath and roadside are causing inconvenience by being an obstruction, eyesore, and are dangerous for the traffic flow at or near the road crossing or on the footpath or on the edge of the footpath.
“As per Section 122 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, any vehicle found hampering pedestrian movement, due to unclaimed and damaged and parked haphazardly by the roadside and obstructing the pedestrian movement has to be removed” he said.
The MMC has found that there is already congestion on the road and because of this, it is causing a public nuisance and endangering the lives of the motorists as well as pedestrians. Citizens/owners of the abandoned vehicles have been issued the notice to remove the unused vehicles from the footpath and roadside within 15 days failing which the council would be forced to take punitive action including seizing the vehicles and auctioning them on as is where is basis.
“Please note that as per Sections 127 and 201 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988, if a motor vehicle is abandoned or unattended for 10 hours or more in a public place, so as to cause impediment or being a barrier to the free flow of traffic, it can be removed by towing services or wheel claiming by the authorised person, hence the notice,” the Chief Officer said.
