MERCES: In what turned out to be an anti-climax, elections to the managing committee of Morombi-O-Grande Tenant Association passed off peacefully as the opposition group who forced postponement of the polls on two occasions did not turn up for the election process in the Mamlatdar’s office on Friday.
The committee members elected unopposed are Nicholas Nunes (chairman), Uday V Naik (vice chairman), Basio Caridade de Sa (secretary), Vinayak P Pilarnkar (treasurer) and Ramdas Vasu Naik (attorney).
In all, 38 voters participated in the election, of which 15 were proxy voters. Sources informed Herald that the opposition group, comprising mostly proxy voters, decided to stay away as they did not have a majority.
When the election process got underway, the media was not allowed inside the premises while the police stationed outside allowed entry only to eligible and proxy voters.
Presiding Officer Awal Karkun Pravinjay Pandit was assisted by Merces Talathi Rajesh Navelkar and Talathi Hemant Naik in verifying the voters and proxy voters, after which the election process was put into motion behind closed doors.
Speaking to Herald after his victory, newly elected Chairman Nicholas Nunes said his first priority will be to get money sanctioned from the mamlatdar so that a new sluice-gate is installed at the Voddli Manos.
When asked whether he will install a new sluice gate at the Zoddi Manos, which also needs repairs, he replied in the negative, stating that the bid-winner has deliberately damaged the same and it is not the committee’s responsibility.
