Polls to SMC chief, deputy on May 21

MAYEM: Elections to the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) will be held in the SMC office on May 21.

MAYEM: Elections to the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) will be held in the SMC office on May 21. Three candidates ~ Damu Ghadi, Upendra Karpe and Manisha Pokle ~ all backed by the BJP were short listed at the first meeting convened recently.
“However, the candidate for the post of chairperson and deputy chairperson will be confirmed within the next two days,” informed Sanquelim BJP President Santosh Malik.
BJP has the support of six councillors, Dayanand Buryekar, Narayan Relekar, Dishita Naik, Damu Ghadi, Manisha Pokle and Upendra Karpe, while Congress has backed four councillors, Riyaz Khan, Kunda Madkar, Rashmi Desai and Vibha Desai. One councillor, Dharmesh Saglani is an independent candidate. 
The Congress is also working out strategies to muster a majority in the SMC, with former MLA Pratap Gawas stating that the Congress-backed group could come in power if they receive the backing of Saglani and one BJP-backed councillor.
