Margao: The South Goa District Planning Committee (DPC) has not met for nearly three months. A new DPC of the Zilla Panchayat members, MLAs and municipal officials was formed about two and half a months ago. They were supposed to hold a meeting, which was delayed due to the municipal elections. The ZP higher-ups do not seem to be serious about following up on matters that had been discussed earlier.
The DPC members of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat were elected on October 6, and since then, there has been no progress on holding a meeting. The DTP has even been mandated to take the first steps towards consulting the authorities, like the municipal councils and panchayats. The committee has 8 ZP members and is headed by the ZP chairman. They, along with the DPC secretary as well as MLAs and councillors are mum on the issue.
Speaking to Herald, former South ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues stated, “The ZP chairperson and chief officer have to follow up the process of holding the DPC meet, which has not happened for quite a while. It is ideal to hold the DPC meet now as all the councils have been formed, while the MLAs have expressed willingness to help the ZPs with developmental works and funds. But we have to help ourselves first.”
The DCP is formed every three years and is responsible for planning developmental works of the district and conveying their proposals to the State government for implementation. Meanwhile the South ZP has received 50 percent of the funds promised to it.
