VASCO: Dr Chandrakant Shivdikar (58), a health officer working for Mormugao Port, was arrested by CBI sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 5000.
Dr Shivdikar reportedly accepted the bribe for issuing an NOC to a contractor supplying materials to the ships calling at the Mormugao port.
After the arrest, CBI officials conducted searches at the office of Port Health Office located at Mormugao port and at the residence of Dr Shivdikar, at Headland Sada.
CBI sources informed that the CBI officials from Mumbai also conducted search at the native residence of the officer located in Mumbai and that some property documents have been seized by the CBI officials, though official communication on the seizure of property documents in Mumbai is yet to be received by to CBI office in Goa.
Dr Shivdikar had reportedly demanded Rs 7500 for issuing clearance certificate to the contractor. However, after negotiations, the deal was settled for Rs 5000.
But later, the contractor approached the CBI officials, who laid a trap and caught Dr Shivdikar red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 5000.
Dr Shivdikar has been arrested under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. He has been remanded in CBI custody for two days. Investigation is still in progress.
