Every year, World Organ Donation Day is observed on August 13 to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation. But despite its life-saving potential, many people remain hesitant to pledge their organs due to a lack of awareness, deep-rooted myths, religious misconceptions, fears of medical misuse, and the emotional discomfort associated with discussing death. These misconceptions continue to create barriers that prevent people from understanding the true significance and impact of organ donation. In Goa, two filmmakers, who are cousin brothers, Numair Khan and Rameez Shaikh are creating awareness on this critical issue through their works. Numair has directed a short film titled ‘Illumunate’ and Rameez has made an advertisement named ‘Imagine if it were you’. “‘Illuminate’ is a short film created to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation. Through the emotional journey of its protagonist, the film encourages viewers to look beyond misconceptions and understand how one decision can save multiple lives,” says Rameez, who worked as assistant director in the film and also starred in it. The film stars Rameez in the lead role alongside Falak Fatima Siddiqui as his wife. Sakshi Kittur and Sarah Cabral portray the pivotal roles of the mother and the blind child, respectively, and while Yaseer Beig plays the doctor.
Lenin Rodrigues and Abigail Picardo appear in supporting roles. The film was edited by Varun Kashyap, with voice-over by Sharvi Dhond. It was directed by Numair. Rameez Shaikh ‘Imagine If It Was You’ (Ad Film) is a public awareness advertisement that explores the importance of organ donation through a powerful and relatable narrative. “The ad tells the story of a husband who dismisses his wife’s decision to pledge her organs, believing it has no relevance to their lives. Following her untimely death due to the unavailability of a donor organ, he is forced to confront the reality of organ scarcity and realizes that one person’s decision to donate can save another’s life. The advertisement aims to encourage empathy, inspire conversations, and motivate people to pledge their organs, giving others a second chance at life,” says Rameez.
The ad film was created for an organ donation awareness competition organized by ESG and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO). Directed by Rameez Shaikh, the ad film features Cyrus Fernandes and Prachi Shirodkar in the lead roles, with Rameez portraying the role of a friend. Cinematography was handled by Krishna Sharma, editing by Siya Chodankar, sound recording by Mario Pimenta, and voice-over by Sharvi Dhond. “Working on both of these projects was a truly rewarding experience. Through the process, we gained a much deeper understanding of the importance of organ donation.
We spent a significant amount of time researching the subject and attended awareness sessions on organ donation, which gave me valuable insights into its impact,” says Numair. “These projects made us genuinely happy because they allowed us to use our craft to contribute to a meaningful cause. Knowing that these films have the potential to help someone understand the importance of organ donation and inspire them to make a life-changing decision is incredibly fulfilling,” adds Numair. Going forward, the brothers want their films to inspire other individuals and filmmakers to create stories around important issues like this, and in their own way, contribute to spreading awareness about organ donation. “If more people talk about it, understand it, and come forward to pledge their organs, perhaps we can take this cause to a point where, someday, no one loses their life simply because a life-saving organ was unavailable. That, for me, would be the true success of these films,” says Rameez.
