MARGAO: Fruit and vegetable vendors from the Margao SGPDA market allegedly attacked roadside vegetable vendors from Ponda and Balli over a business dispute on Monday. The roadside vendors – all women – were operating near the Ravindra Bhavan junction.
The market vendors complained that their sales had fallen drastically due to the roadside vendors, who sat in a prominent location, thus attracting more customers. An argument over the same broke out between the two groups near the SGPDA market. The roadside sellers later approached Margao police, who brought the situation under control.
Ponda vegetable seller Subhadra Gaonkar claimed that a few women and men drove up to the roadside vendors in a car and started to shout at them. She stated, “They told us to leave the place, and then they picked our valuable vegetables and threw them around the place.”
Another vendor Shobavati Gaonkar added, “The market for what we grow is only Margao. Where do we go to earn a living?”
