MARGAO: A late strike by Clifford Fernandes enabled Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem to overcome St Savio Sports Club, Calangute 1-0 and storm into the semi-finals of All-Goa Joao Francisco Pacheco memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Betalbatim Sporting Club at Betalbatim sports complex, Sunday. There was no score at the lemon break.
Incessant rains throughout the day made life miserable for the teams as they struggled to play free-flowing soccer. St Savio had a golden opportunity to surge ahead but Sammer Chodankar muffed a sitter when he shot wide with only the rival goalkeeper at his mercy.
At the other end, Guardian Angel took time to settle down and once they struck rhythm they called the shots against the rival citadel.
Post resumption, the teams tried their best to score the match-winner but the difficult conditions alongwith some good defending by the respective defenders stood in their way.
Guardian Angel struck the all-important goal through Clifford Fernandes late in the second half when he slotted past the rival goalkeeper.
St Savio tried their best to get back into the game but to no avail as the rival defenders and goalkeeper stood tall in protecting their citadel.
