Wilred Leisure pip Salcete; Signals rally to hold Police

MARGAO: An injury time goal by substitute Sertorio Monteiro helped Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim to score a 2-1 victory over Salcete Football Club in a GFA First Division league match at Assolna ground, Friday.

Wilred Leisure led 1-0 at the breather.

Wilred Leisure’s Melvin Fernandes had chance early in the game but he spurned it as with only goalkeeper Albino Gomes to beat but he shot wide.

At the other hand, Salcete took time to settle down and once they struck rhythm they called the shots.

Yet, Wilred Leisure kept their opponents on the backfoot but midfielder Peter Pereira’s well executed shot beat the rival goalkeeper but bounced off the frame work.

Wilred Leisure surged ahead in the 21st minute when Agnelo Colaco headed home a cross from Peter Pereira.

Salcete had a couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards were erratic Salcete nearly found the equaliser soon after resumption but striker Oliex Oliveira headed out. Later, Andrade Fernandes muffed a sitter off Manush.

Salcete equalised off a  spot kick in the 58th minute. Meldon D’Silva brought down Oliex and referee Prasad Surlakar pointed to the dreaded spot. Neves Noronha scored.

Salcete were charged up and Oliex’s header struck the post on its way out.

Wilred Leisure had opportunities but their forwards squandered chances. They suffered a blow when their striker Melvin Fernandes was red carded after a dangerous foul on Benny D’Silva.

Wilred Leisure’s Sertorio Monterio struck the match-winner in the injury time when he tapped in a Bruno Fernandes cross.

With this win, Wilred Leisure collected 15 points from eight matches while Salcete have 11points also from eight matches .

Salcete’s coach Roberto Fernandes expressed displeasure with the referee’s decision for allowing Wilred Leisure to score the winning goal after the end of injury time.

At 3 MTR ground, Navelim, Goa Police and Corps of Signals played a 2-2 draw.

Our Reporter adds from Panjim: Police were 2-0 up within 10 minutes with Rajiv Salgaocar 5th and Paresh Morje 10th being the scorers to give Police a 2-0 lead at half time.

Signals came back strongly after the break with Zouthom Sangha scoring in the 59th and Budhi Singh restoring parity in the 72nd .
