Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi possesses the potential to make an even greater impact on white-ball cricket than legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar.
However, Uthappa stressed that Sooryavanshi’s remarkable talent alone will not guarantee a successful career. According to the former India batter, the people surrounding the 15-year-old and the way his development is managed will play a crucial role in determining how far he goes.

Speaking on CommBoxTV, Uthappa praised Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach to batting and his ability to perform despite his young age. At the same time, he pointed to several examples from Indian cricket where highly rated youngsters failed to fully realise their potential after making spectacular starts.
“He could have a bigger impact on white-ball than Tendulkar. But how he’s managed is going to be important,” Uthappa said.
The former India batter referred to Vinod Kambli and Prithvi Shaw as cautionary examples. Both players attracted enormous attention early in their careers and were tipped for long and successful international careers.
“We’ve seen in Indian cricket exciting players come through the ranks. We saw Vinod Kambli and Prithvi Shaw and started asking what they would become when they were 17-18 years old. And then suddenly they fall off the wagon,” Uthappa added.
Sooryavanshi has rapidly emerged as one of India’s most exciting young batting prospects. His aggressive strokeplay and confidence against experienced bowlers have attracted widespread attention, despite him being only 15 years old.
His rise has also sparked comparisons with some of the biggest names in Indian cricket. Tendulkar, who made his international debut at 16, remains the benchmark for young Indian batting prodigies. Uthappa’s comments therefore underline just how highly Sooryavanshi is regarded.
Yet, the comparison also comes with a warning. Young players often face enormous pressure when expectations rise quickly, particularly when they are repeatedly compared with legends of the game.
Uthappa believes Sooryavanshi’s support system will be vital as he moves through the different stages of his career. Coaches, family members, team management and other people around him will have to ensure that his development remains focused and that he is protected from unnecessary pressure.
The challenge will also be to ensure that his aggressive style continues to evolve as opposition teams learn more about his game. As Sooryavanshi progresses from youth cricket to senior-level competition, he will encounter bowlers with greater experience and more detailed plans to counter him.
For now, however, the teenager continues to generate excitement with his performances and fearless approach. Uthappa’s assessment suggests that the ceiling could be exceptionally high.
Whether Sooryavanshi can eventually turn that potential into sustained success remains to be seen. But if his development is handled carefully, Uthappa believes the youngster could leave an extraordinary mark on white-ball cricket.
