Expressing deep concern over the rising threats of drug abuse and HIV in the Northeast, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday revealed that Tripura saw a 103% surge in drug seizures in 2023-24. The destruction of seized drugs also rose sharply by 130%, reflecting the state government’s intensified crackdown on narcotics.
Addressing students at the state-level programme ‘Bell of Awareness’ held at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala on International Youth Day, Saha said Tripura currently ranks fourth in the Northeast for HIV cases. To support affected individuals, the state government provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,000 to 3,433 HIV-positive citizens.

Pointing the dangers of gradual addiction, Saha cautioned students: “Drug addiction does not happen overnight. You must exercise caution, and parents should stay vigilant. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have emphasised creating a Nashamukt Bharat (drug-free India). Our government is committed to a zero-tolerance policy to make Tripura drug-free.”
The chief minister stressed that tackling HIV/AIDS and drug abuse cannot rely solely on government efforts. “All sections of society must come forward,” he said.
