PANJIM: Liquor
Traders, bar and restaurant owners on Wednesday has decided to approach the
Supreme Court with a review petition in regards to the ban of liquor trade
along 500 mtrs highway.
Addressing the
media, Goa Highway Affected Liquor Vendors Association (GHALVA) Convener,
Gaurish Dhond said “The association would file a review petition with the
Supreme Court in regards to ban of liquor trade along 500 mtrs highway hoping
to seek relaxation of the ban order”

“The
highways were built much later after the liquor traders set up their stores and
also these stores have been present on that location for years now. The state
government should denotify these highways” said Dhond
He further
said that the business cannot be just closed down and will cause huge losses
and that the Supreme Court order should have clarity.
Dhond
further clarified that Goa Liquor Traders Association (GLTA) along with Bar
Owners Association of Goa (BOAG) will also file a review petition with the
Court and currently due to the code of conduct in force; we are not in a
position to take decisions on the ban until a fresh government is elected and
government is formed.
“As
elections are currently being held in five states and the code of conduct none
of the governments in these states are taking cognizance of the Supreme Court order”
Dhond added
The State of
Goa has almost 11,000 excise license holders out which majority are coming
under the Supreme Court ban order which is coming to force on April 1.
Meanwhile,
While, Liquor Traders Association, Leader Dattaprasad Naik said that the Excise
Commission is misinterpreting Supreme Court orders and liquor vendors will be
filing review petition in the Supreme Court over highway liquor store ban.
