PANJIM: Crozan Society, Bastota, emerged champions trouncing Star Sports Club, Gudi, 8-0, in the State Hockey Championship organised by the Goan Hockey at the Parso Truf, Peddem sports complex, Mapusa, recently.
The Goan Hockey conducted three championship matches. In the junior men, Star Sports Club, Gudi, edged past Young Sports, Mapusa, 6-5, via tie-breaker.
Both the teams played a 4-4 draw during the normal time. At the half time, score was 2-1 in favour of Star Sports Club. Sulel Gaonkar put Star Sports Club ahead in the very 5th minute. The hard-working Ramat got the equaliser for Young Sports Club in the 17th minute. Then again Sulel gave the lead for Star Sports Club in the 27th minute.
Crossing over, both teams were evenly balanced in all the departments of the game and focused on ball possession throughout the third and fourth quarters and were tied with 4-4 goals.
In the penalty shoot-out, Star Sports Club were too good and their goalkeeper was a hard nut to crack, winning by 2-1 goals, on aggregate 6-5 goals to be the State Champions for 2024.
In the junior women, San Antonio Warriors got the better of Goan Hockey Promoters, Navelim, by 6-0 goals in a one-sided match. Riddi Shirodkar, scored a hat-trick, while Naveli (1), Tiddi Hadfadj (2) were the other scores. Only Alliyah Periera shined for Navelim team.
In the senior men, Crazon Society hammered Star Sports Club, Mapusa, 8-0. Yes Sab Sayed, Suresh Mayenkar and Subham Sharma, combined well and pumped in goals at regular intervals. Star Sports Club goalkeeper Sachin Goankar showed some good reflexes, or otherwise the score would be in a double digit.
Chief guest Bastora School Headmistress Sr Wendy Sequeira gave away the trophies, certificates and cash prizes to the teams in the presence of dignitaries.
Earlier, Goan Hockey Secretary Feral Furtado welcomed the gathering, while Anjulo Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks. Also present was Goan Hockey President Abhay Bhamaikar.
