CANACONA: Hundreds of residents of Canacona on Wednesday staged a protest rally at the Canacona Deputy Collector’s office to demand a footbridge over the Galgibaga river.
Expressing outrage over the death of former sarpanch Agnes Afonso, who was hit by a moving train at Galgibaga, the protestors, which included Galgibaga Parish Priest Fr Simon Fernandes and Galgibaga Panch Caetano Barreto, approached the authorities to renew their long-pending demand for a footbridge.
The protestors held placards outside the deputy collector’s office at Chaudi and a delegation was later permitted to meet Deputy Collector Sudhin Natu to discuss the issue.
The delegation asked the deputy collector for the status on their long-pending demand for a footbridge over Galgibaga river, which was initiated way back in 2007.
They also demanded that the deputy collector write to the KRC to completely block the public access to the railway tracks from either sides at Galgibaga and Maxem.
The delegation also reminded Natu that the CRZ authority had also granted its NOC to construct a footbridge of 1.5 m width in 2008.
