VASCO: Fish vendors from Vasco are divided over proposed construction of new fish market by Goa State Urban Development Authority.
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, in order to get a consensus over construction of the new fish market, had invited the fish vendors for a presentation at St Andrew’s Church hall, Vasco, and about 200 fish vendors were present.
Municipal Director Elvis Gomes brought to the notice of the fish vendors that construction of the fish market is a long pending issue. He urged the fish vendors not to object to the construction and place their views for any changes.
St Andrew’s Church Parish Priest Fr Jose Antonio D’Costa requested the fish vendors not to unnecessarily object to construction of the market.
During the presentation, the fish vendors were informed that construction will be two storey. Basement will be utilised for parking of cars and motorcycles, while the ground floor will be for fish vendors with proper sanitation and toilet facilities. The first floor will accommodate fruit and dry fish vendors with a cold storage facility and the second floor will be utilised for car parking.
After the presentation, when the fish vendors were asked to place their views, some objected to the new construction stating that they want to operate from the old fish market, while most were in favour of the new construction.
Some fish vendors complained that they didn’t understand what was explained during the presentation. They said if the presentation was explained properly, then it would have cleared their doubts and there would have been no confusion in the minds of the fish vendors.
Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer Y B Tavde and Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Sankwalkar were also present on the occasion.
