They informed that the music was an inconvenience to elders and school children in the vicinity and alleged that their requests for silence had been ignored. However, the hotel denied the charge.
As the authorities have failed to act, the locals decided to take matters into their own hands, while Calangute MLA Michael Lobo assured action for playing loud music beyond permissible limits.
The locals informed that they have been pleading with the hotel management to stop the music, which was sometimes played throughout the day and stopped only late in the evening.
A resident Mitchel said, “The loud music is unbearable for the elders, while the school children have a tough time studying. We have been requesting the hotelier to play music at lower levels, but they are least bothered about the inconvenience to us. We wrote to the Goa State Pollution Control Board and other departments against the noise pollution, but except for an inspection there was no concrete solution to the issue. We have also brought the matter to the notice of our MLA Michael Lobo and are waiting for a solution.”
When contacted, Rodrigues, a representative of the erring hotel ‘Grand Mercure Goa’ Shrem Resorts, said, “We have been playing music at lower levels and have been maintaining friendly relations with our immediate neighbours. However, if there are any issues of noise pollution, etc. it can be resolved amicably.”
However, the locals alleged that the management wasn’t entertaining them when they approached them in person.
Meanwhile, Calangute MLA Lobo stated that the authorities, including the police, should act firmly if loud music was played causing inconvenience to the locals.
