“We have sent the ‘handing over’ letter to the new Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes. The shifting of prisoners under strict security cover will be the priority,” a PWD official said.
The work of the state-of the-art jail which has been completed comprises cells to house drug peddling accused, two barracks, one kitchen, a reception centre and hospital.
The Rs 107-crore project, located on the eastern side of NH-17 on the scenic Colvale plateau, will be commissioned only by May-end as 90 percent work has been completed. Once ready, the prisoners from Aguada central jail, Mapusa judicial lock-up and some from Sada jail will be shifted to the new Colvale jail.
