CANACONA: A woman accused her mother of confining her and selling her newborn son to a woman. Two persons, including the baby’s grandmother, have been arrested in this connection.
According to Canacona Police, Zara Sheikh, residing at Welwada-Poinguinim, complained that her mother Melivani Devi had confined her in a room and kidnapped her newborn and had sold her baby boy to one Lalita Devidas on November 17, 2013 at Welwada.
Police rescued the minor boy from the custody of Lalita Devidas and arrested both the mother, Melivani Devi and Devidas under Sections 342, 363 IPC and Section 8 of Goa Children Act 2003.
The duo was produced before the court and remanded to 14 days police custody. PSI Prashal Dessai is investigating the case.
Sources informed that Devi’s daughter, who was reportedly working at Mumbai, returned home pregnant and delivered a baby boy in Goa.
“As the mother felt her daughter was not yet married and fearing that a son born out-of-wedlock had already brought bad reputation to the family, the woman’s mother reportedly gave the possession of the new born to a family member, who were looking for a child, despite protests from her daughter and ignoring her cries that she is already married,” informed a source.
Lately, the alleged husband returned to her home in Poinguinim and the girl claiming that her name is Zara Sheikh, together with her husband proceeded to lodge a police complaint against her mother and the alleged purchaser of her son to get back possession of their child.
