MARGAO: Villagers of Majorda-Utorda-Calata on Friday resolved to oppose the housing project in Utorda, even as the village panchayat on Friday called a meeting to discuss the housing project with the villagers, the builder and local MLA Mickky Pacheco.

While the builder was conspicuous by his absence, Pacheco told Herald after the discussions that he has suggested to the Panchayat to reject the file by citing reasons and sent back the file to the builder. “People of Utorda in my constituency are objecting to the housing project. I am fully supporting the cause of the people. I will stand by them in the battle against the project”, Pacheco said.

Sarpanch Moises Vaz had called for a discussion on the housing project as the builder has submitted his file to the panchayat body for approval.

Villagers, who gathered at the panchayat office, however, said they are firmly opposed to the project. Villagers contended that they have suffered on account of the housing projects set up in the village, which have only brought hordes of outsiders to settle in the village. “In this particular case, the builder has proposed to construct 31 bungalows on land admeasuring 7000 sq mts. This will only create a separate colony of outsiders in the village since the locality has only 40 existing houses belonging to the locals. This will create a demographic imbalance which is against the interest of the village,” remarked a local villager.
