CANACONA: A major tragedy was averted on Saturday evening when a tourist taxi which was parked in front of the lobby of a popular high-end resort on Palolem beach road, unable to hold on to its hand break rolled down the ramp only to come and halt right in the middle of the road horizontally, which made for a bizarre scene and attracted a lot of eyeballs and shutterbugs holding traffic for quite some time.
The traffic got held up for a while till the locals pushed it back into the hotel compound. Fortunately, the road was empty when the vehicle crawled down the slope on which it was parked.
An eyewitness said that the car slowly and steadily was crawling down the slope, someone present at the scene had a presence of mind and with great effort prevented the car from falling into the roadside drain but this in turn blocked the entire road.
Fortunately there was no one traversing the road when the incident occurred. The road otherwise has lot of moving traffic at that time of the day.
As the car was blocking the entire width of the narrow Palolem beach main road, many motorists using that road got inconvenienced for some time till locals took the task into their own hands and heaved the car back halfway into the hotel’s compound where it was originally parked.
Later, the driver of the car made his presence felt and removed the car to a safer location to the relief of everyone.
