It is a shame to see the picture of one of the wells in a disarray condition in the jurisdiction of Mormugao Municipal in the news report of Herald dated Thursday, May 11, 2017. This is an unique opportunity to bring to the fore a similar picture of a well to the notice of City Corporation of Panaji (CCP) which is situated right down the left side corner (a beautiful piece of land consisting a well) near the Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim which is also in a same condition.
So many people pass by that side but neither they nor the CCP authorities are bothered to clean this well. The church authorities had once cleaned this well for the need of drinking water. But at present the well has been turned into a huge garbage bin where people just throw their waste without giving any thought to what they are doing.
It is left unattended, uncared and not maintained and just left like a giant garbage bin. People from Panjim used to drink water of this well and use it for all purposes.
This well has a heritage historical value. Nearly half of the population of Panjim used to use this well water which was owned by one resident of Panjim. The well was maintained by him and used to serve the Panjimites before the water-pipeline was introduced in the city. But now it appears that none of the passers-by are aware of this well.
Inquiries and verification carried out with some of the nearby residents revealed their sweet memories of this well.
Hope the authorities observe the state of this well and carry out the necessary cleaning, asphalting and cover the well with metal net and bring back the water so that it can be used by the nearby residents before the onset of monsoons.
