MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council may be struggling with the door-to-door waste collection exercise, but it is now grappling with another problem – waste that is finding its way into the city from the neighbouring villages.
Monday saw gunny bags stuffed with waste dumped right opposite the KTC bus stand. After inspection of the site along with Savio Coutinho, MMC Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello said the Margao police has been told to initiate action against the unscrupulous contractors dumping waste in the city.
Sources in the Municipality said that while the civic body is making efforts to make the city free of bins by implementing the door-to-door waste collection, waste coming from the neighbouring villages is making the exercise a difficult proposition.
Banners put up at selected point warning garbage contractors of action and fine have not deterred the unscrupulous elements from disposing off their waste in the city.
Two days ago, waste was found in Colmorod ward along the road side. Inquiries by Savio Coutinho and others revealed that the waste had come from a Colva hotel. “We have now decided to act tough against outside elements dumping waste in the city. We will evolve a mechanism wherein the unscrupulous elements are tracked down and punished,” Coutinho added.
Meanwhile, the MMC chairperson said that the workers engaged in the door-to-door waste collection programme would soon receive their wages for the month of August. “We have done the follow up with the government and expect the money to come soon for payments,.
