Tenant Association denies allegations of damaging mangroves

PANJIM: The Morombi O Grande Tenant Association has denied allegations of damaging mangroves while accusing the previous committee of stooping low to hide their wrong deed.

“We are going as per the circular from Mamlatdar to carry out annual pre-monsoon works. As per the circular, if any field is submerged spoiling crops the committee will face an FIR. We obtained all the permissions from the concerned Mamlatdar and the Soil Conservation officials to conduct the work,” informed a member of the association at a press conference, on Saturday.

The farmers and villagers of Merces on Friday accused the Association for allegedly cutting mangroves and damaging sluice gate.

They said that the Tiswadi Mamlatdar had given permission to the tenants association to repair a bundh but the Association office-members damaged mangroves and built a separate bundh.

The present Association said they are not involved in any destruction of environment while adding that the previous committee was involved in Rs 86 lakh fund misappropriation, the matter, which has been transferred by the Bombay High Court at Goa to the Mamlatdar for probe.

The Association said, “They have carried out a lot of work during their six months tenure so far in consultation with the people of the village and permission from authorities concerned.”

PANJIM: The Morombi O Grande Tenant Association has allegedly accused one family for harassing them as the present committee is unearthing the past committee’s alleged irregularities.

Chairman of the Association further claimed that they are being falsely implicated to pave way for one family to privatise the bundh.

“We are doing public work. It is not personal. Father and son say it is their bundh. It is not a private bundh but of the public and the Comunidade. They are doing it to give access to their bar and restaurant and hence our committee is being harassed,” the Association members said.

The committee vouched to expose the misappropriation of funds and other irregularities by the past committee pointing out to the complaints of harassment and domestic violence by the family.

“Entire village knows this family has cases against them,” he said adding, “We (committee) are digging into it. They (past committee and the family) don’t want this committee and therefore they are harassing us.”

The Association accused the complainants in this matter of breaking the sluice gate and destroying mangroves and falsely implicating the sitting committee.
