MARGAO: Residents and business owners in Margao’s Old Market are banding together to combat the increasing issue of beggars and migrants creating a nuisance in their area. Their action plan involves a meeting to discuss the issue and submitting a memorandum to the authorities. The residents claim that the beggars are causing havoc in the area and are involved in local thefts.
Local tradesmen are determined to take a stand against the issue, with one saying, “We have to join in the fight. This beggar menace in the Old Market and surrounding areas is affecting the residents and shop owners.” The residents believe that these beggars and hawkers are part of a larger gang that is committing crimes in the area when residents are away.
Gangs of beggars are common in several areas, including Old Station Road and SGPDA Market. Citizens allege that the gangs are being monitored by someone who is not from Goa, with evidence of a vehicle registered in another state transporting beggars to Margao. Despite complaints to the police, the issue persists, causing hardship to the locals. Migrants selling various items around the Old Market traffic junction have also become a nuisance. The residents claim that they continuously scan the area and are involved in petty crimes and thefts.
One common product sold by these migrants is windscreen spray cleaners, which they randomly spray on vehicles, much to the irritation of passengers.
Residents are now requesting that the authorities take action to maintain Goan identity, cleanliness, and peace around Fatorda and Margao. The community is taking a stand against these issues and fighting for a safer, cleaner, and more peaceful environment.
