MARGAO: Margao Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello has come under fire from social activists demanding his resignation for abetting an illegal structure in a road widening area and for allegedly carrying out gambling activities in his bar at Mungul.
A day after he appeared before MMC Chief Officer for a hearing on the illegal structure, social activist Aires Rodrigues has called for the immediate resignation and served an 8-day ultimatum to resign or threatened to approach the court.
Meanwhile, Gonzaco has firmly ruled out the question of quitting office in the face of these accusation. He said he has not indulged in any illegalities. He said, “House tax is being paid for the two structures and I do not know how they can be termed as illegal.” On the bar front, he said he has leased out the bar and restaurant and feigned ignorance of any illegal activities going on there.
Contrary to general impression that the ruling MMC led by Gonzaco enjoys the backing of the BJP leadership, the Fatorda unit of the BJP on Thursday slammed the Civic body saying the city fathers are only interested in toppling games rather than paying attention to the general needs of the constituents.
A delegation of BJP Fatorda mandal has called on the Chief Officer Narayan Sawant to provide basic civic amenities saying the councillors have lost their credibility in the eyes of the citizens.
A memorandum was submitted to the chief officer suggesting a number of points to be taken up in Fatorda.
