PANJIM: The State government is considering bringing a legislation to curb drunken driving as in several instances; the authorities have established a correlation between drunk driving and the risk of traffic accidents.

Minister for Transport Mauvin Godinho has proposed that establishments serving liquor will have to mandatorily employ a driver, who will be assigned the duty to ferry “customers in an inebriated state” to their destination.
“We do not want drunken driving incidents. In the long term, my government will bring a legislation that will make it compulsory for all places (establishments serving liquor) to employ minimum one driver. These places will have to ensure that if their customers are drunk, they should not be allowed to drive their vehicle, instead the driver will drop the customers to their destination,” he said while speaking to the media persons at the launch 10th State Road Safety Week at Kadamba Transport bus stand in the capital city, on Monday.
The Minister added that the government is examining the proposal to ensure safety on the roads.
“A person drinks and drives resulting in accident. It leads to death of an innocent or injuries, some of which are permanent. This is totally unacceptable,” Godinho said adding that the legislation, once in force, will also have to be followed by the tourists.
With the theme for this year “Think and Drive, Stay Alive”, he further appealed to the public to come forward to keep Goa safe from accidents while reiterating to follow safe driving techniques.
“Transport Department is marching ahead and doing its best to get most of their services online,” Godinho added claiming he would want Goa to get Number One ranking in the country towards road safety.
A special vehicle has been designed by the Transport Department to create awareness on the occasion of Road Safety Week which will move till October 31.
